Miami-Dade district cuts teaching positions.
The Miami Herald (6/10, McGrory) reported, "The Miami-Dade school district has eliminated 800 teaching positions over the past two weeks," according to school officials. And as "[t]he teachers who held those jobs will likely be rehired to fill positions opened by attrition at other schools," these "reassignments could sharply reduce the number of new hires." Some school board members were upset to learn of the reductions, which also "caused an outcry from teachers across the district." Vice Chairwoman Perla Tabares Hantman said, "I thought we had voted against a reduction in force." A spokesman for the district explained that "the cuts were made by principals and district budget specialists during the time in which they evaluate their schools' staffing needs and budgets." The spokesman added, "This year, we are looking at major reductions in funding from the state, so of course, there are much larger implications for schools."
