• Title of the book(s) to be used:
Fraction Fun by David A. Adler
Polar Bear Math by Ann Nagda and Cindy Bickel
Give Me Half! By Stuart J. Murphy
Jump, Kangaroo, Jump! By Stuart J. Murphy
• Other Materials (for activities)
Froot Loops, pencil with eraser, ruler, dry erase board, dry erase markers
• TEKS Objectives: §111.16. Mathematics, Grade 4.
• The student will construct concrete models of fractions, compare fractional parts of whole objects or sets of objects in a problem situation using concrete models, use fraction names and symbols to describe fractional parts of whole objects or sets of objects, and construct concrete models of equivalent fractions for fractional parts of whole objects.
• Procedure:
a. Warm-up Activities:
• The student will look through Polar Bear Math by Ann Nagda and Cindy Bickel, Fraction Fun by David A., Give Me Half! By Stuart J. Murphy, and Jump, Kangaroo, Jump! By Stuart J. Murphy.
b. Main Activities:
• For the first activity, Froot Loop Fraction Frenzy. My student will take a bag of Froot Loops and count how many are total in the bag. They will then divide the Froot Loops into color groups. They will then fill out the paper putting the Froot Loops into fraction form, so we can compare them, add them, and subtract them.
• For the second activity, Disney Fraction Fun. It’s a board game. The student and I will both play this game. We will take turns rolling the dice, moving our game pieces, drawing a fraction problem card, and answering the problem. First one to reach the castle wins.
c. Follow-up Activity:
• As a follow-up activity, I will have the student fill out their Fraction Journal. The student will write what they learned about fractions today and they learned about today.
d. Assessment:
• N/A
