4th Grade: Addition and Subtraction
1. Title of the book(s) to be used:
How Much Is a Million? By David M. Schwartz
Numbers by Henry Pluckrose
2. Other Materials (for activities):
Blank note cards, black pen, graph pictures, Beanie Baby, black permanent marker.
3. TEKS Objectives:
The student will identify the place value of a digit, round numbers, estimate whole numbers, solve patterns, add up to five-digit whole numbers including money, and subtract up to five-digit whole numbers including money.
4. Procedure:
a. Warm-up Activities:
- I will ask some questions about the student’s background from the interview sheet.
- I will also have the student ask me questions, so they will feel comfortable.
b. Main Activities:
- My student will read How Much Is a Million? By David M. Schwartz.
- My student will then read Numbers by Henry Pluckrose.
-I will use the activity Math Express Mail. Since there are several areas that need to be covered the subjects are several areas that need to be covered, the subjects are changeable. There are about 10 questions for each topic.
-I will use a different activity next, Math Jeopardy. There are three columns with 5 card choices under each title for the student to pick from. The student will pick the category of their choice, the card f their choice, and answer the question on the card.
c. Follow-up Activity:
- I will use the activity Toss and Answer. The student will toss the Beanie Baby onto a shower curtain board that will have random math problems and questions on it. The student will then answer the math problem or question that the Beanie Baby landed on.
d. Assessment:
-I will assess their understanding, by having the student play an activity. The student will get to play the activity of their choice from the ones we play that day.
