1st-3rd Grade: Phonics Phonemes
Title of book(s) to be used:
• The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss
• I Can Read with My Eyes Shut! by Dr. Seuss
Other Materials (for activities)
• Blank note cards
• Black permanent marker
• Beanie Baby
• Construction paper
• Paper plates
• Colored pencils
• Markers
• Glue sticks
• Scissors
Procedure: Warm-up Activities:
• I will do three phoneme activities; Phoneme Isolation, Phoneme Identity, and Phoneme Substitution.
• I will ask questions that for each of these activities, and have a list of questions in front of me that the student can not see.
Phoneme Isolation, Phoneme Identity, and Phoneme Substitution can be done differently. It's up to you how you want to do it. I used a list of words that went along with the list of questions.
Procedure: Main Activities:
• My student will read The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss first.
• My student will then read I Can Read with My Eyes Shut! by Dr. Seuss.
• My student will read a list of 6 example sounds, I have prepared ahead of time.
• I will use the game Phonics Puzzle first. There are three different endings in this game; -ing, -ay, -ot. There are 5 for each, if more are needed the materials are there.
• I will use a different activity next, Express Mail. There are 3 different vowel sounds in this game; Long E, Long O, Short A. There are 10 for each.
The Phonics Puzzle is just words with the endings cut off and they have to match them.
Express Mail is a shoe box covered in construction paper with slots to look like a mail box. On each side there is a title to tell you which side belongs to which vowel sound, you can change these to fit your criteria. On each "letter" is a word. The student has to say the word and put it in the correct mail slot.
Procedure: Follow-up Activities:
• I will use the activity, Word Wrigglers. The student will make one for the ending sound and one for the vowel sound of their choice.
Word Wrigglers is a paper plate with construction paper streamers. The streamers have words on them that go along with the theme of the Word Wriggler.
Procedure: Assessment:
• To assess their understanding, I will have the student play an activity.
• My student will toss the Beanie Baby on to a shower curtain board that has the 6 sounds we went over earlier; -ing, -ay, -ot, Long E, Long O, and Short A. The student will then have to say a word that matches what the Beanie Baby landed on.
