3-5: Dream Team Basketball Stations
by Lisa Sinon, Learn NC
Students will refine their basic skills of basketball by participating in a variety of basketball stations.
A lesson plan for Grades 4–5 Healthful Living Education
Students will:
- -demonstrate a bounce and a chest pass by hitting a designated target on the wall
- -dribble a ball through a cone course with control
- -become more accurate in shooting a basketball
- -develop the basic skills of basketball
Time required for lesson: one class period
Materials/resources
- -basketballs
- -cones
- -basketball goals
- -masking tape
- -station signs
- -poly spots
Pre-activities
1. Make signs for the stations. (I place a photo of basketball player on the sign.)
2. Set up the stations. * Station 1 — four basketballs. * Station 2 — four basketballs and make a line ten feet away from wall. Also, make four 8×8-inch squares on the wall as a target for the chest pass. * Station 3 — four basketballs and cones. Scatter cones around creating a dribbling course. * Station 4 — four basketballs. Also, place poly spots in various spaces on the gym floor for the students to shoot from. * Station 5 — four basketballs. Place a restraining line ten feet away from wall. Then, place four 8×8-inch squares on the wall as a target for the bounce pass. * Station 6 — four basketballs. Place two poly spots on the floor as a starting place for the lay up.
Activities
After warm-up activities, teacher reviews each station and demonstrates each station. Students are divided into groups and each group spends approximately five minutes at each station.
Dream Team Basketball Stations
1. Michael Jordan’s Free Throw Station. The students will stand behind the free throw line and practice a free throw.
2. Glen Rice’s Chest Pass Station. The students will stand behind a designated line and perform ten chest passes against the wall. The pass should hit a 8×8-inch square that is marked on the wall.
3. Kobe Bryant’s Dribbling Station. The students will dribble around the cone course ten times.
4. Grant Hill’s Shoot Out. The students will perform three shots from each of the designated places on the court.
5. Scottie Pippin’s Bounce Pass Station. The students will stand behind a line and perform ten bounce passes against the wall. The pass should hit an 8×8-inch square that is marked on the wall.
6. Karl Malone’s Lay-Up Station. The students will begin at a designated mark on the floor and practice their lay-up.
Assessment
- Assess if the student is successful at making the bounce and chest pass hit the target on the wall. (Are the students standing behind the restraining line before each pass? Are the students following-through after each pass?)
- Assess if the students dribbled the ball through the cone course with control. (Is the student looking ahead while dribbling? Is the student dribbling at waist-level?)
- Assess if the student is able to shoot the basketball through the basketball hoop accurately and with control. (Is the ball projected with sufficient arc? Is the student concentrating on the target spot?)
