Posted 10 months ago Do you think it is useful to give out classroom jobs to the children? (such as line leader, the person who gives out handouts, door holder, etc..) |

| Posted 10 months ago When I was in the 5th grade (about 50 years ago) I was the blackboard washer. I still remember it as being an honor to clean the boards. Everyone likes responsibility. The more jobs the better, in my silly opinion. :) The Story Starter provides 373,067,200 creative ideas for writers.

| Posted 10 months ago Yes, I do. But some things have to be decided first: 1. How to assign the jobs 2. How long a child gets to do the job 3. What you do if a child isn't doing the job or doing it well enough Most children really like having responsibility, and doing a classroom job makes them feel that they're more "part of" the class. You need to make sure, however, that everyone gets a chance and that children with certain jobs don't "abuse" their authority (some kids can become "little dictators.") |

| Posted 8 months ago I think it is useful. It teaches students responsibilty and the elementary level students love helping out the teacher in any way. I remember getting to be the line leader, cleaning the chalk board, passing out papers, and being the caboose. It was all fun. |

If the child isn't doing the job or doing it well enough, you can encourage them to do a better job or assign them a helper or let them pick a helper. Pretty much though it's up to each teacher. |

| Posted 8 months ago I rotated my class jobs on a weekly basis. With specific assignments, there were never any arguments about who did what- and the students really looked forward to doing their jobs. I can only remember one time when the student didn't carry out their job effectively. Usually they feel such a sense of pride for having something different and special to do that they behave. Try not to make a pattern of taking the job away. A job is a job. Expect it to be done. If it doesn't get done to your satisfaction, the student should keep the job and loose another privilege, like recess or free time. One teacher in my school took this to another level and used government titles for class jobs. Someone was president, vice president, etc. I think the jobs lasted 2 weeks instead of one. He had thought out each class job position and written descriptions on the board. He took pictures of all of the students and posted their picture next to the job when the time came. |

| Posted 6 months ago I have my kids "apply" for their jobs. Each marking period I post a classified ad in our class newsletter. Interested students are to write a "letter of interest" including why they would be perfect for the job. I conduct the interviews the first marking period, but then the hired students interview for the next marking period.Real-world experience and english writing practice!
