Does anyone know how merit pay works?  I am a music teacher -not a core subject teacher.  How will merit pay affect me?

It depends on how your district and, in many cases, your school allocates the money. In the schools that have chosen to participate in a trial merit pay system in New York City, some schools have decided to only reward core-subject teachers, some have decided to reward all teachers, and at least one decided to reward the whole staff, including the librarian, nurse, custodians and lunch-room workers, acknowledging that not all learning takes place in the classroom and  the contributions EVERYONE in a school makes to the processes of teaching and learning.

"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence."

~~ Abigail Adams (1744 - 1818)

Although I have long believed in the idea that some deserve more than others...the hard part is how to determine who deserves more.

If the principal decides, some would say that he/she is picking friends or those who are loyal. If teachers decide, it could be a popularity contest. If parents decide, how would they know who deserves more. If students decide, God help us all!
