Would you still have gone into teaching?  Just a thought.  I took 11 years off and when I returned 3 and half years ago I was shocked at all the changes and how teachers are more stress out.

My answer today is yes because I'm currently completing my masters.  There are days when I wonder if it's all worth it?

I definitely would have gone into teaching. I've had over thirty years of wonderful employment, doing a job I love, one that I consider highly important and greatly rewarding. Heck, there are times when I can't believe they actually pay me to do this.

I think I would have gone into teaching sooner.

Thank you for your replies.  I do know it's worth it! My students in the morning run up to me and hug me and I'm sure you all know that feeling. I also mentored a spanish child last year and taught her to speak english.  I think I just took on too much this semester.  When I did return to teaching it was the one thing missing in my life.  After a hard day, an assistant principal said to me, "I stay for the kids." and my reply was "that's why I'm back!"

I'm just overwhelmed with family, school, and work.  San, you did with four kid, so I know it's possible. I have to tell you  that I applaud you!

This is my fifth year and not only would I go into teaching again, I'm sorry I didn't do it five or ten years earlier.

>>Would you still have gone into teaching?<<

As the first in my family who went to college, teaching was considered a very high level field.

Now, more than 30 years later, I know of many other very interesting fields that were available.

Although I was very good at teaching and well respected...I never had the dedication that many on this forum have expressed. Frustration with the system and knowledge of other jobs would have taken me to other fields. So...the answer would be NO.

Yes, but I would have started where I am at (a specialist teaching technology) instead of starting as a second grade classroom teacher.  This is where I am meant to be for now and I am enjoying it!

It's life's way that we don't know ahead of time how hard, challenging, and rewarding things can be. Yes, I would have gotten into teaching knowing what I know now. As you learn along the way, it's those experiences that shape who you are, how you handle what life throws at you, and how big a difference you make.

Very nicely put!

Wouldn't it be nice to hear from the others?

It seems as though the same more experienced (and in my case very old) people answer posts regularly.

A question like this can be answered by everyone...it's not brain surgery to tell if you would have done it over again.

Yes, Joel, it would, although I take offense at being called old (even if I am).

OK...I changed the content of my post (I think for the first time) to...

If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone into the military, retired and then became a teacher.

I have taught on the elementary school level for 31 years. It has been rewarding, but I still hate that I didn't go into the military.

For sure!  Teaching is exhilarating!  I too, wish I had done it sooner.

....and Joel, thanks for rewording that.

Well, I am in my 20's so I guess I would be considered young .  I have only just entered the teaching world and it is challening, stressful, tiring, and time consuming; but it is also the greatest job I think I could ever see myself doing.  I had the opportunity to choose any career I wanted to study and I chose education.

I always hated that I didn't go into the Peace Corps.  I hear they are taking old folks so I may still get my chance.

You're not old!  You're as old as you feel!  I'm forty but I refuse to grow up and there is still that little girl in me that makes me an awesome teacher!  :)
