Todays article  www.theapple.com/news/5466-should-i-give-students-my-phone-number gave conflicting opinions.  What are your policies about being accessable off the clock.  What about email and technology solutions?

If you are not yet a teacher....what would you do?

Students have (had actually no students now) my home phone number.

I would be accesible to both students and parents.

Subject to abuse, I know but call screening works on those.

Students can have my cell phone number, not my home phone number. I respond to their texts but do not initiate. I have only gotten a few calls and texts even though hundreds of students have my number.

My home number is listed and I did have a problem with one student calling and one parent calling repeatedly. Other than those, I have not received calls at home.

I think I would be weary of giving my students the number I use for all my other personal calls. Perhaps to parents, but not students. I might consider setting up a voicemail, though, just for any students/teaching concerns.

I give students and their parents my cell number. Students have called once in four years. Some of the parents call from time to time with legitimate concerns. No one has abused the priviledge.

I think this also depends on in what type of community you teach. If you teach low-income students who may have no other way to contact you (i.e. email), then giving out my phone number would make most sense.

When I refused to give my phone number the first 5 years of teaching, I seemed to have received more "undesirable" calls from parents who looked it up in the phone book.

The past 5 years, I have chosen to post my number on my website and NEVER have had a parent call me for something ridiculous.  The calls have been about field trips, behavior, homework, ....

If I taught upper grades, I am not sure I would give it out so freely.

No, I do not give my students my number. I have an email address and a work phone they can call. If they can't get through to me via those options or the school, it's unfortunate.

In addition, my number's unlisted in the phone book.

Absolutely not!

At first I did, but a few of my  (again, adult students) called me a bit too often like I was the computer help desk...as did some staff members. I got questions like how do I install memory, or Why can't I open Word. One teacher even called during vacation break and invited me for lunch at her house and when I got there she asked if I could configure the printer.

...so it's an emphatic and resounding NO!!!

Wow. How frustrating! Definitely a lesson for all of us to apply some sort of clear boundary if we DO decide to give out our numbers.

I teach at the college level, and always include my email and cell phone in my syllabus. For the phone, I also have hours that they can call or text me (usually from 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM), and I do tell them that I may, or may not, return their call or text that day, depending on my work load...but that they will hear from me by the next morning. If I have had a busy day, or I am tired, I just let all calls go to VM, then check it at my leisure.

I have given my cell number to my students but no one make a call. They make a call during Examination time only. Ex students always make a call to me.

I thought that I wouldn't want students to have my number, but honestly, the ones that do only text or call when they really need something important.  I prefer to communicate with parents by email...paper trail, paper trail, paper trail.  I like having conversations in writing.  This helps with documentation.
