Start by looking at yourself, thinking about your interests and about how you relate to children. Since you are considering teaching I assume you are comfortable with children, but are you more comfortable with young childrten, those 4-6 years old, or those 7-11, or perhaps teenagers? Do you have a passion for history, math or science, if so you might want to consider middle or high school teaching.

Depending on the state in which you plan to work, you may have to get a different certification depending on the age of the children you seek to teach. In NY, for example. there are separate certifications for birth to kindergarten, pre-K to 2nd grade, 1st - 6th grade, 5th-9th grade, and 7th to 12th grade, so one really has decisions to make before choosing the college program to take.

Once you get your certififcation and hired, you can be assigned to teach any grade within your license. I am licensed from first to sixth grades and in my four years of teaching I have worked in 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th. None of the changes have been at my request.

I hope this helps.

Why do you think you want to be a teacher?
