I know that schools in different areas start on different dates, but I'm interested in finding out who starts when.

New York City schools open for students on Sept. 2nd, but teachers start on August 28th.

What do you do the 2+ weeks before the students start?

I go back the 25th of August and will see students on the 26th.

My son goes back to school on September 2nd while his teachers have been at work since August 26th.

We are supossed to prepare the classrooms, write te annual program, go to teacher trainings, read new student's files( those who come in the 5th grade had only one teacher until the 4th and they have 10 new teachers in the 5th), meet the parents and the students who are transfered from other schools.

And of course have coffee with other teachers.

For some reason, I don't think you get tired.  You look like the teacher who, no matter how many hours she works,  has a smile on her face and pep in her step.

I would love to have student files BEFORE school begins!  How nice.  Last year I had over 30 students on IEPs, but I did not get the IEPs to read until a couple of weeks into school.

That's ridiculous!  Wouldn't this be against the law?   There has to be some type of school policy or state policy that teachers must be notified what is needed for each child's IEP!

If the student was in my school last year I can get the IEP on the first day of school, sometimes the day before, but if the student comes to us from another school or district it can take weeks for the IEP to reach me. I had two students last year whose IEPs never made it to us from the schools they had previously been in.

I teach freshmen.  Their IEPs are coming from the middle school (the building next to the high school).  It takes time for them to make the trip.

In Indonesia, teachers started last July 11, but students reported on July 16. In Philippines, the schools reopened last June 9 this year.

In my children's school district, new teacher orientation was from July 25th to July 29, all teacher orientation was from July 30th to August 1st, and then the children started school on August 4th.
