If you were given $500 to spend, what would you buy for your classroom?

Well it didn't quite cost me $500 but here is what I already do and I would expand it.

I keep a supply of a variety of granola type bars like Quaker oats.

I leave a few in a discreet area where anyone hungry (for whatever reason, in a rush, or lack of funds etc.) can grab one. When the few have been taken, I replenish from my supply.  Usually a couple three (linguistic license new phrase) disappear each day.

At full retail (I buy discounted boxes) that would be about $540.00.  I probably spent about a third of that.

In order of priority: winter coats, hats and gloves for my students who need them, nutritious snacks for those who are hungry, comic books or anything else my boys would read, and lots of cough drops.

Maybe you could use this website: http://www.flaghouse.com/default.asp?Category=Sensory%20Solutions

It offers sensory products..including acrylic mirrors and a link to a professional grant writer who will help you write successful grant proposals. (It says free..but let the buyer beware!)

Everything that we need for the classroom and school is bought for us by the school. We only have to give the list.

I used to be so lucky. This year, we were told to limit our orders and all orders must be pre-approved by an administrator. Due to budget cuts of course.

I spend anywhere from $500 to $2000/year out of my pocket for my students.  I keep granola bars, cough drops, and tampons on hand, as the students need them.  As I'm sure we all do, there will be a few students unable to get supplies.  Then there is about $40/month in lab supplies bought from the supermarket.  I have a couple big ticket items from the hardware store (last year ran more than $300), along with some nails and washers.

If there were extra money I would buy the chemicals from Flinn Scientific that I usually get but did not this year due to budget cuts.

Cool. What should I do, though? I work in a very affluent school district. Should I bother providing? Shoot, a lot of these kids have better cars than me.

hotteacher, you might want to consider sending a "wish list" of classroom items you could use home with your students.

Yeah, I should get moving on that. These parents certainly aren't hurting for cash!

I know what you mean! My poor husband get 100 dollars from GA gov, to buy whatever he wants, and that helps, but they do not get anything from a list and half the time the school does not even have paper for the copier. So with our 100 dollars we bought mostly lined paper (notebooks and filler) and pencils/pens for students who really needed them. as well as the odds and ends for teaching. It was a blessing to us because we did not recieve one last year
