How do you stop your students from losing their writing instruments every 3 seconds?

Make them pay for them. I stopped giving away pencils in the second half of the year and it was amazing how quickly my students started bringing their own and learned how to keep track of them.

I charge them 10 cents per pencil and it makes a difference.

Can you legally charge them?  I have a lot of parents that would have  a problem with that?  Or do you use some sort of "class monetary system?"

 I used to sell pens for a quarter a piece or three for a dollar. :)

When my wife was teaching, she would let them borrow a pen and took a shoe as collateral. Very effective method of getting your pens back.

That's hillarous, I work with emotionally disturbed teenages.  I know a few that would be throwing their sneakers at me!  :)  It is an adorable way for you to get what you own back.  I'm kidding, believe it or not, some of the kids I work with just need love and understanding.  By the end of a new school year I love them and they love me!

I have always had a gift or magic with children and animals.  It's ironic because me and a lot of adults dont mix too well.  I don't trust a lot of adults but I do have a lot of faith in children.

Mrs. Heffner's approach is a great one.  You could take the money as collateral, too.

We had a teacher at my school last year that did the same thing..need a pencil..give up a shoe.  I followed her lead.  Funny how students stop 'losing' or 'forgetting' their pencils!

I remember a teacher when I was in High School did the same thing.

I never found money as collateral working well. They wouldn't mind giving up a quarter or so. A shoe, on the other hand, they would notice was missing. No one usually wants to walk around all day limping.

I don't think my adult students would give up a shoe...and a dime would be a joke. I'd have to up the ante. lol

I tried the shoe thing today for the first time and it got wonderful results:

1) If my students had any doubt about my sanity, those doubts have been resolved;

2) I got all my pencils back; and

3) a student from a class down the hall came to me with her teacher's shoe and asked if Mrs. B could borrow my masking tape.

This is one idea I'm going to keep using!

I'll be sure to tell Mrs. Heffner that what worked in Brooklyn also works in the Bronx.

In addition to the shoe collateral system - I draw a small X on the sole of the "collateral" shoe with a marker. My students know that they can not use the shoe with an X on it any more as a collateral, so next time they have to scrub the X off. Giving them a lesson that if they forget the pen too often, they have to work a bit to borrow one.
