Though most teachers who have integrated interactive whiteboards into instruction feel they enhance student learning, many teachers have expressed concerns with using interactive whiteboards and keeping students focused.  One of the main concerns I hear is while one student is at the board, teachers are challenged to keep other students focused on the learning.

So I asked a few teachers what they do to deal with this.  Here are a couple of the solutions they offered:

  • Put students in teams so that they all work together and compete against other teams.

  • Give each student an individual whiteboard, marker, and dry eraser.  Have everyone work through problems or write their answers while one person is at the interactive whiteboard.  Then have everyone hold up their answers once the correct answer is on the board.

  • Have students copy all that is done on the interactive whiteboad and give a participation grade for their note-taking.

Do you have additional solutions for this issue?

What challenges have you had in using your interactive whiteboard in the classroom?  How did you resolve it?  Would you like to know how others have attempted to resolve your issue?
