WANT to work Part Time

I want to work part time or take a class related to what I teach, Design, Multimedia, and Web Design.  Anyone know how to find opportunities in Richmond, VA or surround area for related classes?

My mother has Alzheimers, and I cannot BEAR the thought of her knowing (when she does remember) that I am 'free' to do whatever she 'thinks of' at the moment.

TRAVEL would be my first choice, but being divorced and paying my own way doesn't allow that with what we get paid.

Hope you all have fun, refresh, and enjoy this much-deserved break!

Hi:

I teach (computer technology) in Fairfax Co. (VA) and do a little bit of web design too!  Regarding web design training, please check out:

http://www.adobe.com/training/?ogn=EN_US-gntray_supp_train_home and see if you can find something free ( it says self paced).

I too am looking for a part time/hourly "tech support" kind of job for 4 weeks in July - around Annandale/Falls Church/Fairfax area of VA.

Good Luck,

Vasantha Rayman

I'm a computer teacher as well and will be working part time as tech support readying the school for the 2008-2009 school year.  I will also be creating some online training modules.

I would give anything to have a part-time summer job.  You'd think employers would offer a pool of jobs to us:  we are an educated group of people who have a work ethic.  Maybe that's something we should start somehow:  go to employers and have a web site JUST for summer jobs for teachers!!  I don't know how to do this, but would be willing to help. . .

I think a reality check is in order here. Employers are not looking to provide charity work for teachers. They have specific needs. Very few have needs for a person who is only willing to work for a month or two. By the time they train you, you'd be gone. Those who are hired for small periods of time are high school and college students who are willing to work for a minimal pay. To get a good job, you have to provide a needed skill. If you can create high quality (and the emphasis is on high quality) Web sites, you should have no problem in finding organizations who could use your skill. If you don't have a special skill...why would anyone want to hire someone just because he or she is a teacher? I really don't understand why anyone would think that teachers, just because they are teachers, are more valuable than anyone else. Develop a special skill and you'll have no problem finding a summer or part-time job. It's not about you...it's about the employer's needs. Get real!

A great summer job for any educator is a local summer day camp. We have the skills they are looking for, they usually pay more than minimum wage, and actually ARE willing to hire someone for only a month or two. Plus, its a great way to get outside and have some fun while making a little money in the process. Check in your local paper, city schools, or the nearest YMCA.

Joel, I think there is a great job you should look into for the summer.  Maybe a janitorial type job in an MR. MANNERS business.  Rudeness is out in the 21st century.  I think teachers are some of the greatest, most qualified, and hardest working people.  I think the summer teacher jobs would be great!

On the contrary, I think that honesty is very much in. Although honesty can sometimes seem offensive, it is usually very helpful. Teachers who seek part time or summer employment should seriously consider developing specific skills that would be wanted by a potential employer. A teacher who wants a summer or part time job should decide what kinds of jobs they want and then develop the skills that are needed. Vague notions of "greatest, most qualified [to do what], and hardest working people" probably fit many non-teachers as well. In a job market, you want to set yourself off from the others with unique qualifications...unless you are simply looking for a job in a local MacDonald's. :(

Look for seasonal work - you don't need a great deal of experience, just a good work ethic - try a landscaper or even the local library. If you want to work in America - there are jobs. You're not going to make a great deal of $$, but that's not the point or you wouldn't be a teacher.
