Some parents wouldn't even think of it, but many request teachers for the next school year based on what they've heard about teaching style. Does this happen at your school? Does your principal honor requests? What kind of problems do you see with parents requesting certain teachers for their kids?

I requested my son's Kindergarten teacher because I needed someone that would fit my son's needs (Speech/Resource Room). I didn't feel that the others would serve him well; hence, teaching has its benefits (e.g. honing in to good/bad teachers). I didn't requested rather I was recommended his 2nd-grade teacher. She was wonderful. I wished I did the same for him with his 1st-grade teacher. I wasn't too fond of her, though.

Teachers are requested at my school.  Although I do not know the percentage of the requests that are actually honored.

All the time!  I think being a private school makes this even more prevalent, because parents are paying for their child's education, they feel like they should have a say in who is teaching their child.  It is so bad that the administration has put policies in place to take some of the pressure off of the teachers.

Absolutely - although as someone else noted, I'm not sure how many of the requests are honored. Our school is moving toward themed academies within the school (ie; engineering, Spanish immersion, IT, etc.), and those parents are especially vocal about advocating for their kids.

As a parent, I would probably do the same and request teachers. Even though I really love the department that I'm in, I have to confess we do have a couple duds that are a couple years away from retirement and whose teaching style is comprised largely of dittoes and videos. I wouldn't subject anyone to that kind of treatment! However, from a teacher's perspective, it can be annoying because it can lead to really large class sizes - which leads to bad classroom management and poor instruction.

I requested a teacher for my daughter and it was granted.  My children are in the school I work in and I'm fortunate to have a good friend who gives my children all the best teachers.  Although, it doesn't always work out because children are put on teams in middle school.  I was able to have one of my children switched out of a class that wasn't working for her.  I don't know about all school districts but mine has given me what I've asked for.

When my son was in elementary school I used to ask his first or second grade teacher who she thought he should have the following year. I did not request those teachers, but somehow he always got them. The only request I ever made was that my son, a general education student, be in the inclusion class for third and fourth grade. I did this because the inclusion class always got two of the best teachers in the school.

Parents and students often ask for particular teachers.  I ask for a particular style of a teacher, and I have asked to NOT have a particular teacher.

We've never asked for a particular teacher, however, when my daughter was moved from one class to another we did protest.  She was excited to get the teacher she was originally assigned, because of class size, the school hired an additonal teacher.  She was a first year teacher who did her student teaching at that school.  Mr. Adams, her original teacher didn't want to lose my daughter either, but the principal selected the kids....

My daughter had a miserable year, the new teacher was not asked to come back the following year.  Luckily, her 5th grade teacher was AWESOME and did a great job of preparing her class for middle school.

No one has seen or heard from the 4th grade teacher.  Maybe she changed careers.  I would have approved that move.
