I love the end of the year since I know my students so well by then. But the end of the year gets them so excited sometimes with all of the events happening at school that it's hard to keep them focused. Anyone else?!

Yes and yes! Keeping them focused can be a challenge for sure, it seems like some days are much easier than others.

When the day is warm and sunny, it is pretty tough to keep them focussed. The key is to always have a well-planned lesson with authentic work for them to engage in. Keep them busy!

In NYC we have our last standardized test, the math one, in late March. If a students passes that and the state ELA test in January, they get promoted, no matter what else they do or don't do the rest of the year. The students know this, and once the math test is over they are largely lost.

Prior to the test we do a lot of practice tests and other test prep, so I save all my projects until after the math test. Right now I'm in the process of planning a major cross-curricular project based on paper planes. The unit will include measurement, finding the mean, mode and median of data, stem-leaf plotting, percentages, metric conversion and plane geometry, and that's just the math element. The science teacher is incorporating the dynamics of flight, air currents, displacement, and a few other things. Students will also research paper plane designs, create their own design and test it, write a report of the distance trials, and write a letter requesting use of the hallway for a flight path. They will also read about aviators, read and follow instructions for building the planes, and design an experiment for testing incremental modifications in their basic plane design.

Right now the project is slated to last three weeks, but it seems to want to expand to four or more.

The countdown begins....but it's still a way to go here up north since we teach almost all the way through June. May is still pretty productive before June sets in. But I'm still looking forward to sleeping in this summer ;)
